  1. The Sea Kings - About as Medeival as it Gets.

It’d be no surprise that if you’re playing very retro sounding stuff (and I’m talking retro as in 5-1200 years retro) that you might be in a league of your own. You know, the sort of group that doesn’t have to worry about copying their peers and all the fuss that comes along with bands striving to be unique. This particular trio, The Sea Kings, is the epitome of original - at least to my very unfamiliar ears - and is actually quite charming despite the eccentric music.

If you’re in a rush, don’t sit around and wait for this ~7 minute clip to play out but instead scroll to about midway when Sky Eats Airplane drummer Travis Orbin is laying down his portion of “Contour,” off of The Sound of Symmetry (no, not The Sound of Separation, that’s UnderOATH). Orbin is a machine, though I suppose it’s hard to appreciate that if you can’t hear what’s happening around the bass drum region. Turn on your subwoofer, enjoy.

  3. Sky Eats Airplane // The Sound of Symmetry EP: it’s just awesome.

Arguably, bands nowadays are crippled by overproduction in the studio so when it comes time to play live, there isn’t much to show for. I always had the idea that this was the case with Sky Eats Airplane but that sentiment’s beginning to change. This wildly inventive and often overlooked six-piece had put out an inspired self-titled sophomore album last year and ever since I wasn’t sure what to make of the band, what with their literally chaotic instrumentals and gripping melodic hooks. Too good to be true? The Sound of Symmetry is the band’s 3-song followup to their 2009 LP and boy is it good.

  4. Gaezzetti - Glorious Indie Rock from Central NJ

I’ve never been very big on self-promotion (especially here on Praise For Wallflower), but now that I’m playing drums for a band that consists entirely of PFW writers (both past and present) I feel like it’s a necessary action to take.

  5. Procession Came Opposite - Bring in Summer with a Bang

Summer’s getting close and I’m finding myself repeatedly looking for the perfect soundtrack. My emusic account is dry, used up all my downloads, and exhausted all reasonable prospects. My criteria’s ever-changing, but mostly I want the perfect roll-your-window down and cruise album. And, after a year of looking, here’s my pick: Procession Came Opposite, the band that holds that coveted monopoly on my car stereo.

  8. Video #540618152

Joey posted an mp3 by He Who Never (aka Mr. Aaron Rosell) several days ago. I’ve really been digging his stuff, and decided to browse youtube to see if I could find any live performances. This was one of the first ones that popped up, an excellent performance of his track “Morning.” If you like what you hear, find out more at http://hewhonever.com!

  9. SHAPES - Math Rock You Don’t Need a Calculator For

Been pretty hooked on the international sounds of a band that does what people often call “math rock” very right. Leaving a lot of the genre’s signature confusion behind, UK trio Shapes make some intricate guitar licks, group shouting, and heavy-hitting songwriting way more palatable than say Dillinger Escape Plan ever would.

Aloha’s new record Home Acres hits stores today!

The mailorder exclusive maroon vinyl looked so stunning that we decided to set up a little photo shoot for it.

Being it’s first time on camera and all, the vinyl was understandably a little shy. But with a little coaxing, Andy was able to get it to peek out from behind the gatefold jacket.

  11. Video #428537790

This video corresponds to the feature on Tubelord that I posted earlier this week. It’s a video for their single “Propeller” from their debut record Our First American Friends. I would post some more mp3s from these guys but I’m not at my own machine right now - so keep an eye out later this weekend.
